The cormorant is a common name for large aquatic birds, related to the gannet and the pelican; it’s found predominately in temperate and tropical regions, mostly on the sea but also on inland waters. Cormorants are featured quite commonly in heraldry and medieval ornamentation, usually in their "wing-drying" stance, which was seen as representing a cross.
